On June 20, 2019 partners of the «Cooperatives for Health» initiative met in Geneva for discussing research findings on the potential of health cooperatives in promoting universal health coverage.
Besides IHCO representatives, the meeting brought together representatives from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, International Labour Organisation (ILO), Association de Soutien aux Centres de Recherches, d’Enseignements et de Soins, NorWest Co-op Community Health, Education and Solidarity Network, Contrecoeur and Confcooperative Sanità.
The objectives of the workshop were to discuss the characteristics, content, structure, management and funding of the knowledge platform for health cooperatives and identify possible next steps and timeframe to move the project forward. The follow-up of 2 pilot projects for improving healthcare services through cooperatives in Kenya and Cameroon was also presented.
As an introduction, IHCO President Carlos Zarco gave a presentation about the role of health cooperatives in the world, describing their entrepreneurial model, the benefits that they imply, and showcasing some examples and data from IHCO member organizations.
